Teen drivers a greater danger in summer

New Jersey parents of teenage drivers should be aware that the American Automobile Association designates the period between Memorial Day and the start of the new school year as the "100 Deadliest Days." Based on figures from the last several years, it is predicted that around 1,000 people will die in motor vehicle accidents involving teen drivers in that time period during 2016.

Traffic fatalities on the decrease

While heart disease, drugs and alcohol are some of the leading causes for death, many people die in motor vehicle accidents in New Jersey each year. In fact, almost 34,000 people died in a car-related accident throughout the nation during 2013, according to the latest findings by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

New technology attempts to reduce deaths from driver fatigue

Fatigued drivers frequently pose a serious threat to themselves and fellow motorists in New Jersey. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that the amount of fatal crashes at least partially owed to driver fatigue at around 25 percent nationwide. A growing effort is underway to introduce technology intended to combat this danger to the public.

Older drivers face more risks than younger drivers

The risk of being killed in a car accident in New Jersey and around the country increases with age, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This is in part due to declines in vision and cognitive functioning of older motorists, which makes driving safely more difficult, but it is also due to their susceptibility to medical complications after an accident.

Holidays among the most dangerous days for driving

The number of motorists on New Jersey roadways increases during the holidays, as does alcohol consumption. Increased traffic and drinking leads to car accidents, so some major holidays are among the worst days to be on the road. New Year's Day, for example, has the highest percentage of alcohol-related driving deaths, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

1 injured in New Jersey hit-and-run

One person was injured in a hit-and-run accident on the Garden State Parkway in Bloomfield on April 9. The 63-year-old male victim, from Perth Amboy, had been changing a flat tire when a 43-year-old woman driving a 2014 Nissan Altima hit him.

Man pleads guilty in relation to 2013 DWI-related death

A 22-year-old man pleaded guilty to a variety of charges, including vehicular homicide, in a New Jersey courtroom on March 27. The charges stemmed from an accident in 2013 when the man, who was apparently drunk at the time, ran into a pedestrian on a road in Hudson County and killed them.

Car crashes into New Jersey restaurant

The tenants of a New Jersey strip mall are calling for the installation of higher curbs or concrete barriers after a car crashed into a take-out restaurant on March 3. The strip mall, which is located on Water Street in Red Bank, has been the site of this type of incident on several previous occasions, and store owners say that it is only a matter of time before a patron or employee is seriously injured.

Man seriously injured in New Jersey car accident

Authorities say that an 89-year-old man was severely injured in an accident that took place on Feb. 19 around 3:12 p.m. The crash occurred when a BMW driven by an elderly woman crashed into the front of a Wendy's in Bayonne. After the accident, the man underwent surgery and was placed in the ICU at Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health.

Common shoulder injuries in car accidents

People in New Jersey who are involved in car accidents often sustain shoulder injuries. These injuries may involve the shoulder blade, collar bone or arm bone, and they can range in severity from a dislocated shoulder to a shoulder bone fracture. The soft tissue that joins shoulder bones together can also be torn when a person is in a crash.
